Frequently Asked Questions.
What is a videoconference?
Videoconferencing is an interactive tool that combines the use of video, computing and communications technologies to allow people in different locations to meet face-to-face to conduct a conference in real-time.What kinds of equipment are used in a videoconference?
Videoconferencing uses traditional television technology and transmits the signal live to single or multiple sites. Participants can call in on special telephone lines to conduct meetings, interviews, education, leadership training and a whole range of distant learning initiatives - all sites can see, hear and participate. Is the quality on the videoconference call as good as watching a television program?
The quality of the video, while good, is not the same quality that is seen on a television screen at home. This is because videoconferencing utilizes "compressed video" technology. This technology requires less bandwidth to transmit the information and is, therefore, less costly than the type of video transmission utilized in broadcast television.Videoconferencing communication gives the perception of natural motion and telephone quality sound as directly as if you were all in the same room.
Why choose videoconferencing?
Using interactive videoconference equipment reduces the amount of time and money spent in transit to and from meetings. Videoconferencing also reduces the concern for travelling during inclement weather. With videoconferencing, geographically remote people are able to fully participate in a meeting.Another plus of videoconferencing is that you may include more participants in an interactive videoconference than space may allot for conventional types of meetings, allowing for a wider range of representation.
How much does videoconferencing cost?
Videoconference rooms are generally rented by the hour. There is usually a scheduling or reservation fee and an hourly fee for the use of the video systems and the meeting room. Additional charges may apply for the telephone call or calls required to make the videoconference possible. What is the lead time for reserving a video conference call?
Videoconference rooms are scheduled on a space available, first-served basis. Although these rooms may be scheduled for non-video use, priority will be given to scheduling videoconferencing meetings. We typically require a minimum 24 hours notice to book a videoconference call. What is the cancellation policy and fees?
It is crucial that 48 hours notice be given of a cancelled videoconference call so that other conferences can be scheduled. Users will be charged the full rate of a call if notice is not given.Hours of Operation?
The hours of the TechniLite Videoconferencing Centre are from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. After hours and weekend conferences can be arranged to accomodate global time zone differences. How early should I arrive for the videoconference?
It is recommended that you arrive approximately 15 minutes prior to the start of your meeting. Can I connect to one or multiple locations?
There are two types of videoconferences you can conduct: A point-to-point videoconference takes place between two locations (or sites). A Multi-Point videoconference can take place among several (three or more) locations (or sites) and all participate in the same videoconference (usually with one presenter and multiple audiences).A multi-point videoconference requires the use of a video bridge. We can provide the service of a video bridge for an additional fee. (please see our Pricing page for details)
